Cheeses of the Month - June
This month we've chosen cheeses which suit alfresco dining.  Whether you're planning a barbecue, a picnic or a simple light supper, one of our cheese of the month should fit the bill.
  Banon d'Or Banon d'OrTunworth   & Feta
2006 British Cheese Awards Supreme Champion
Come in during June and we'll encourage you to taste them and take them home with a 10% discount.

To enjoy any cheese at it’s best, take it out of the fridge for at least half an hour (an hour would be even better) before you eat it, the difference in flavour is amazing.
To store your cheese ensure you keep it well wrapped, avoid cling film.  It is best if you reuse the cheese wrap we have wrapped it in or waxed paper.

Banon d'Or Banon d'Or
This must be the ultimate picnic cheese, it comes in it's own biodegradable wrapper!  Traditionally eaten by the farmers of Provence with a teaspoon and washed down with chilled local wine.

 Origin – Provence, France
Milk – Cow
Style – fresh, soft.
Appearance – white to cream coloured soft paste, wrapped in chestnut leaves. Banon d'Or   The leaves will turn brown when at peak ripeness.

This cheese originates from the sunny, windswept hillsides around the market town of Bannon, Provence.  After a short maturation period of just two weeks the cheese is dipped in brandy or eau de vie and wrapped in chestnut leaves.  Still young and fresh, the cheese absorbs the delicate, subtle vegetal flavour of the leaves.  Banon is creamy with a full fruity & woody flavour, with lingering tannic notes.
Tunworth
Supreme Champion Tunworth With Tunworth we are celebrating the best of British.   This cheese from Hampshire Cheeses was Supreme Champion at the British Cheese Awards 2006 and won a Gold medal at the World Cheese Awards 2007.  Packaged in its own wooden crate this cheese is ideal for a picnic or great as a barbecue cheese course.
Origin – Hampshire, UK
Milk – Cow, unpasteurised
Style –  soft
Appearance – White chalky curd with soft white bloom.  The curd turns creamy yellow and softens as it matures.
Supreme Champion Tunworth Made by Stacey Hedges & Julie Cheyney from the highest quality local milk from a traditional herd of Ayreshire cows.  Tunworth is a camembert style cheese with a creamy texture, wrinkled rind and a rich, sweet, nutty yet milky flavour.  A  fine cheese which beat 840 other entries to claim the Supreme Champion 2006 at the British Cheese Awards, a great achievement for a company only founded in 2004.
Feta (PDO) Authentic Greek Feta
Could there be any other single cheese that makes you think of sunshine and holidays than feta?  This cheese is ideal for salads, especially Greek ones.  Feta is also a great filling along with fresh tomatoes, basil & olives in filo tarts as a starter or a light summer supper.
Origin – Greece
Milk –Ewe & goat, pasteurised
Style – fresh
Appearance - bright white paste, which has no rind. It has a solid consistancy with a few small holes.  The cheese should be moist as it is should be held in brine.
Feta cheese, essential ingredient of a Greek Salad. A traditional cheese which was featured in Homers Odyssey.  Feta is cheese in its simplest form, once the cheese is made it is matured in a bath of brine.  The cheese is ready to eat within one month but will keep indefinately immersed in brine.  It has an agreeable milky, fresh, if slightly acidic taste and a rich salty flavour.  It is often sold in oil with herbs or flavourings.
