We love our Delicatessen, somewhere
we can stock real foods, real drinks, ingredients with genuine
provenance, books of genuine interest, equipment we've tried and
tested....here's a snapshot..
Cheeses..
We've over 30 cheeses,
the homegrown classics such as the gentle & creamy Organic Brie from
Cornish Country Larder near Watergate Bay and the delectable Bodmin moor
born Cornish Blue. Across the Tamar, the sublime soft Rosary Goats cheese
from Somerset, the cheddar-esque 'Lincolnshire Poacher', full of flavour and
a match for the best cheddars such as the purple waxed Godminster
Vintage which we serve in the cafe with our savoury scones...
Further afield,
try the firm and sweet spanish Manchego, the rich and full flavoured Brie de
Meaux, the 'daddy' of Brie, or succulent, buttery Boccocini Pearls from
the plains of Italy where the buffalo roam....
Charcuterie
We've Spanish Lomo, a whole pork fillet rolled in paprika and dry cured to
produce a sweet, lean, pure 'sausage'. The distinctive & colourul
Magno Chorizo, intensely flavoured with garlic and paprika that's the
essential ingredient in lots of spanish cooking. A firm favourite salami
in 'Salchicon de Vich, from the town of Vich just north of Barcelona, rish
in peppercorns, pancetta and real cuts of meat, it's an essential on any
charcuterie board... Another must have, Blacky Ham, is made by Reinert in
Germany. It's a moist, dark ham, well smoked to give it a robust,
beechwood flavour. Fantastic in sandwiches like our Blacky Ham &
homemade apple mustard seed chutney.
Antipasti
When you're
eating cheese and charcuterie you need something acidic
to cut through the richness. Imagine sweet, baby onions marinated
in a rich, dark balsamic vinegar; Boretone Onions are
unforgettable and so much better than english pickled onions. Think
Olives, think Relish. Giant garlic stuffed, Moroccan spiced moorish,
the almost meaty queen Gordal olives and the chilli and pepper infused
classics. For a hint of summer in the Med try grilled globe
artichokes, steeped in olive oil and herbs. Want the perfect
Caesar Salad? Use white anchovie fillets, delicately flavoured from sweet
pickling and preserved in pure sunflower oil.
Coffees
This is something we're a little passionate about in
the cafe. The secret to good coffee isn't that it's fairtrade,
rainforest alliance or even organic. It's that it's fresh. We've a small
range of good beans which we'll grind for you on the spot, in
small quantities so you'll never get that 'stale ashtray' flavour
again...
Biscuits We don't mean
dunking biscuits.... For the kids, vanilla & toffee flavoured animal
shaped butter biscuits, handbaked in Ashbourne. For grown ups we've
Amaretti biscuits, traditionally good with coffee but brilliant crushed
roughly over Roskillys Vanilla bean icecream as an instant pudding. For a
little retro kitch we've got Oreos, the worlds best selling biscuit.
More importantly we've got some perfect partners for our
cheeses....the wafer thin Millers Damsels, not the distressed
variety, but oat, rye three seed and charcoal. Breads
Oils
Vinegars
Equipment
Books
Gardening
And
much more....
We'll populate the
list a little as soon as we get the chance...
